The triangular image is part of the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990.  The Pollution Prevention Act was created to make a policy of national pollution prevention.  It encourages any prevention or reduction at the source of the pollution, then to recycle to reduce the pollution, next to use the toxic chemicals as a source of energy production, then to treat the pollution environmentally safe, and then finally to properly and environmentally dispose of the pollution.  This process is shown by the triangle image.


   "Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.  Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse. Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity. Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste. Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment" ("Pollution Prevention").

Non-point Pollution's In Montana
A major pollution to Montana is smaller pollution's such as fertilizers and other chemicals put off by farmers.  These chemicals enter the water cycle by going into ground water or running into streams and become part of the bigger lakes.  Water, being necessary to every living organism, is a major hot spot to look at when pollution is being talked about.  Since these chemicals are hazardous in large amounts, we have to prevent them from the source and encourage proper use of chemicals.  One such attempt is the "Clean Sweep Report."  This makes chemical out puts in one convenient document accessible by the state.

One specific non-point source pollution area in Helena, Mt is the duck pond at the local fairgrounds. The ducks stay there year round because people continue to feed them. The waster from the ducks continues to build up more and more every year meaning nitrate is building up in the water. This water is then transported all over the Helena valley flowing in and out of peoples well water supply.
